It was a very fashionable way to exercise and hang out in the ballroom back in the 1970s-1980s when China's ballroom culture originated. As the dancers grow old, ballrooms scattered in modern cities are slowly disappearing, and so is the attendant culture.
Nocturne is a companion piece to In the Park. The ballroom is just like the emotional world of those middle-aged people: closed and ambiguous. Their waned desires are able to be released here. I have successively taken samples from south and north cities of China, to record this vanishing cultural phenomenon from the last century.
